Support Our Barrier-Free Park & Pier

We are in the midst of a mutli-phase project to transform Traverse City’s old coal dock into a barrier-free public park and a hub for nonprofit and educational entities to deliver their programming. The Discovery Center & Pier commissioned the services of an expert in Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance and universal design (a standard of construction that exceeds the ADA) and adopted all their recommendations in Discovery Center & Pier planning.

Thanks to generous donors like you, we successfully raised $2.9 million for Phase 1A of the project which is now under construction. This phase includes new parking and pedestrian pathways, an outdoor classroom pavilion, picnicking shelters, an open space lawn and adaptive fishing area. This phase will be complete the fall of 2023.

Phase 1B of the project will include improved parking along M-22, an adaptive kayak launch and boarding platform, and a new barrier-free restroom facility. If we are successful in raising the funds needed, Phase 1B construction will begin in December 2023 and will be completed in spring 2024. We are still seeking donations to complete Phase 1B.

Your support today will help make our dream of transforming Discovery Pier into a barrier-free public park a reality.

Support The Freshwater Center

Your donation today will support the construction of The Freshwater Center. This collaborative effort will make Traverse City a hub for Great Lakes research, learning, and innovation.
