Barrier-Free Park & Pier

Today, Discovery Center & Pier is a base for nonprofit educational programming and water-based recreational businesses. We welcome the community to enjoy recreational fishing and scenic views from the Pier.

Investing in renovations to remove barriers and improve accessibility is integral to shaping Discovery Center & Pier into a place-based community asset for all. In order to make Discovery Center & Pier a place for all, we are planning many significant upgrades to the Pier and its amenities.

To date, we have completed many of items outlined in Phase 1A of this project including the installation of new fishing area railing—40% of which is at a lower level for people who use wheelchairs and small children, three fishing area shelters with ADA benches, barrier-free parking and sidewalks, and added several picnic tables—including two ADA tables—to the site. The foundation and concrete floor for the 4,000 square foot Discovery Pier Pavilion has been completed with the rest of the structure slated for completion in November 2023. Scroll down for a few photos of our construction progress.

Phase 1B of this project will include the addition of improved parking along M-22, an adaptive kayak launch and ramp, and an ADA restroom. Phase 1B is scheduled for completion in spring 2024.

Phase 2 will be the final phase of this project and will include the construction of additional docks for partner vessels in the basin along with a classroom building and restroom facility on the Pier adjacent to the Discovery Pier Pavilion.
