Inland Seas Education Association

The Impact of Inland Seas Education Association:

Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) provides hands-on STEM educational programming to over 3,000 students a year from the Discovery Pier each year. These students come from across the state of Michigan, northern Indiana, and northern Ohio to become scientists for the day. Some programs focus on the ecology of the Great Lakes where students collect and analyze samples, including fish, plankton, and organisms that live along the bottom of the Bay from aboard a tall ship; others learn how to build and operate their own underwater remote operated vehicle (ROV).

These hands-on experiences increase awareness of the Great Lakes, develop stewards, and inspire tomorrow’s scientists. Our improvements to the pier will provide Inland Seas with covered shore-based space for instruction when rain or more severe inclement weather occurs, space for before and after their time on the tall ships for instruction and will serve kids with disabilities with greater safety and dignity.

The Value of being at Discovery Center & Pier

“We believe that access to our Great Lakes should be available to everyone and are confident this project will allow ISEA to reach more individuals with our important work of protecting the Great Lakes through education.”

-Fred Sitkins, Executive Director of Inland Seas Education Association
