Ship Shapes

Raise the sails and set the tillers in position beneath the navigation lights at Ship Shapes, an interactive exhibit in the courtyard of Discovery Center. Explore the boats that ply the waters of the Great Lakes, today and in centuries past: a historic Mackinaw Boat, a modern sloop, and a stylized model of a Coast Guard buoy tender.

Interpretive signs detail the rich cultural heritage of life on the Great Lakes, including Ashnishinaabek traditions, maritime history and safe navigation techniques. The exhibit is free and open to the public, and is enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.

Ship Shapes was constructed with support from Michigan Humanities Council, Traverse Bay Sunrise Rotary Club and the Traverse City Preston Feather Building Center. More than a dozen volunteers devoted nearly 300 hours of work in fall 2015 to build the exhibit.
